PRABHAT JHA, ITEN Co-Director

Dr. Jha has over ten years of professional experience in the fields of epidemiology, public health, and health policy. Dr. Jha is currently seconded from the World Bank to the World Health Organization, where he is Senior Scientist in the Economics Advisory Service. He is co-chair of the Working Group on Improving Health Outcomes of the Poor for the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health. Dr. Jha joined the World Bank in 1994 through the Young Professional Program. At the World Bank, Dr. Jha has served as Task Team Leader for the Second National HIV/AIDS Control Project and the Malaria Control Project, both in India. Dr. Jha led the work on adult health issues in the Human Development Network, and is the lead author of the World Bank report "Curbing the Epidemic: Governments and the Economics of Tobacco Control" and co-editor of "Tobacco Control in Developing Countries" (Oxford University Press, 2000), and "The Economics of Tobacco Control: Towards and Optimal Policy Mix" (Cape Town University, 2000). Dr. Jha serves on several international health committees and councils and has published widely. He is a co-principal investigator for studies that have received peer-reviewed grants from the Medical Research Council of Canada and other agencies. He has received several awards for his work, including a Jack Hildes International Health Fellowship from Canada and a Gold Medal from the Poland Health Promotion Foundation. Prior to joining the World Bank, Dr. Jha was a Research Scholar at the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Canada. Dr. Jha holds a MD from University of Manitoba, Canada and a D. Phil in Epidemiology and Public Health from Oxford University, England, where he studied as a Canadian Rhodes Scholar.
