Scholarship
The organizers of the 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health
(WCTOH) are pleased to offer a Fellows program for emerging leaders in
tobacco control from low and middle income countries in association with
the WCTOH. We are eager to have diverse geographic, professional and organizational
representation among the approximately 70 Fellowships to be awarded. The
deadline to submit applications has been extended to November 30, 2005.
The WCTOH Fellows program includes participation in a 2.5 day pre-conference
training from July 9 - 11, registration for the WCTOH, round-trip economy
air travel to Washington, DC, accommodation during both events, and a
small per diem. Fellows are also eligible to apply for post-conference
seed grants. The Fellows pre-conference training fosters practical application
of skills and knowledge by assuring relevance of the strategies and information
to the Fellows home environments. A key element of the Fellows program
is the structured opportunity for Fellows to learn about effective tobacco
control strategies from each others' experiences. Information on the Fellows
program, and the application form, can be found on the following URL:

then click on Fellowships.
The Conference organizers are also offering WCTOH travel scholarships
to maximize participation in the WCTOH by individuals from low and middle
income countries. The application for full or partial supoprt for air
travel, accomodation and registration can be found at http://www.13thwctoh.org/t-scholarships.php
then click on Scholarships. The deadline for travel scholarships has also
been extended until November 30.
Other
Opportunities
The World Conference on Tobacco OR Health will be held 13-15 July 2006
in Washington, DC. In conjunction with the conference, the Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health's Institute for Global Tobacco Control
(IGTC) will be hosting a three-week intensive training program for current
and potential tobacco control professionals from low- and middle-income
countries party to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
The program will focus on building a cohort of well-trained and well-networked
tobacco control professionals capable of carrying out research relevant
to the future implementation of the FCTC.
Participants in the program will be supported to attend the Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health's three week Summer Institute in Epidemiology
and Biostatistics, a pre-conference workshop on evaluation strategies,
as well as the 2006 WCTOH. Participants will be able to choose from a
broad range of Summer Institute courses focused on research and policy
and will receive tailored instruction in tobacco control from IGTC faculty.
Participants will also work with mentors to identify and work through
potential tobacco control activities once they return to their country.
Deadline is November 14, 2005. Additional questions can be directed to
Heather Wipfli (hwipfli@jhsph.edu),
Program Director at the Institute for Global Tobacco Control.
