The ITEN supported research in South East Asia covers a full range of economic issues with an emphasis on practical recommendations for public policies.

The research priorities include:

1. Estimating the price elasticity of demand for tobacco products.

2. Estimating the impact of tobacco control policies and other factors on the demand for tobacco products; primary focus is on gathering evidence on the impact of tax increases, introduction of advertising bans, establishment of smoke-free areas, and introduction of pictorial label warnings.

3. Examining issues in the globalization of the tobacco industry.

4. Examining the impact of tobacco and tobacco control on farmers, those employed in tobacco product manufacturing, and other tobacco related employment.

5. Estimating the gross and net health care costs from tobacco use;

6. Estimating the social costs of tobacco use.

7. Examining the impact of tobacco use on household expenditure patterns, particularly among the poorest households.

8. Examining issues related to smuggling of tobacco products.
