Romania
- ITEN provides training and technical assistance to new research on the
economics of tobacco and tobacco control in Romania. ITEN Deputy Director
conducted a session on tobacco taxation in Bucharest in May 2003 as part
of the American Cancer Society (ACS) University for Tobacco Control Advocates.
This workshop was sponsored by Open Society Institute (OSI), ACS, and
International Union Against Cancer (UICC). ITEN

- ITEN is part of the task force that was established in April 2003 to
provide an economic evaluation of tobacco control in Romania as part of
the strategic Romanian Tobacco Control Plan. There are regular meetings
and information exchange between the ITEN contact person in Romania and
the ITEN Deputy Director. The project will result in a comprehensive recommendation
on tobacco control policy for Romanian government.
- ITEN Deputy Director met with a Romanian delegation that visited the
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The UIC Office of International
Affairs mediated the meeting.
Kazakhstan
ITEN provides technical assistance to new research on the economics of
tobacco and tobacco control in Kazakhstan. The project is funded by the
Open Society Institute. ITEN Deputy Director Hana Ross completed an on-site
visit to Kazakhstan in June 2005. Dr. Ross presented international evidence
on economics of tobacco control at a round table in Almaty, Kazakhstan,
June 16, 2005. Representatives of the government, the Public Health Institute
and the press participated in the discussion on tobacco taxes and their
role in tobacco control efforts in Kazakhstan.

Other Activities
- ITEN cooperates with Dr. Elena Kavcová, M.D. , from Jessenius
Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University and Martin Hospital. Dr. Kavcova
and her team received a grant from the American Cancer Society at the
2000 World Conference on Tobacco OR Health.
- ITEN is closely cooperating with a Slovak NGO Stop Smoking (Blazej Slaby,
PhD), and established contacts with government's representatives (Róbert
Ochaba, PhD).
Other Activites in Non-EU Countries
and EU Candidates
- ITEN corporations with the Open Society Institute
(OSI) in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and in the Former Soviet
Republics (FSR). OSI sponsored seven fellows for the period of two years
to conduct a tobacco control project. ITEN was selected by OSI to mentor
two OSI fellows who selected economics of tobacco control as their topic:
Maksym Mashlyakivskyy from Ukraine, and Paruyr Amirjanyan from Armenia.
- ITEN was selected to provide technical assistance to the OSI funded
three-year project in Armenia. The
ITEN Deputy Director made a site visit to Armenia to consult the future
steps in the project. The ITEN Deputy Director also gave a seminar at
the Ministry of Health for representatives of various ministries and members
of parliament, and met with a member of the Parliament to discuss future
steps in tobacco control in Armenia. ITEN is cooperating with the American
University of Armenia in this project. Economics

-Dr. Hana Ross
held a training session on tobacco taxation for tobacco researchers from
the former Soviet Union Republics. The session
was held in Kiev, Ukraine, November
