- ITEN Regional Liaison Dr. Corné van Walbeek was awarded ITEN
grant in 2002 to investigate distributional impact on changes in excise
taxes in South Africa. The final report was submitted in 2003 and was
reviewed by ITEN technical experts.
- Dr. Corné van Walbeek participated in the ITEN organized main
session "Economic Aspects of Tobacco" during the 12th World
Conference on Tobacco OR Health. In his presentation, he shared the South
African experience with tobacco tax increases and their impact on cigarette
consumption.

- Dr. Corné van Walbeek serves a an ITEN reviewer for research
studies from low- and middle-income countries.
- Independent studies from South Africa are bein reviewed by ITEN technical
experts.
- ITEN provided support for our primary contact at AFRC, Corné
van Walbeek, in his successful application for one of the London School
of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine's visiting scholars program that supports
research on internal tobacco industry documents (ITEN collaborates on
similar research with LSHTM as part of the Rockefellar Foundation supported
efforts in South East Asia).
